چکیده

We analyze the management of a coastal aquifer under seawater intrusion using distributed control methods. The aquifer’s state is taken as the water head elevation, which varies with time and in space since extraction, natural recharge and lateral water flows vary with time and in space. The water head, in turn, induces a temporalspatial seawater intrusion process, which changes the volume of fresh water in the aquifer. Under reasonable conditions we show that the optimal state converges to a steady state process that is constant in time. We characterize the optimal steady state process in terms of a standard control problem (in space) and offer a tractable algorithm to solve for it.

Monitoring and Management of Karstic Coastal Groundwater in a Changing Environment (Southern Italy): A Review of a Regional Experience

The population concentration in coastal areas and the increase of groundwater discharge in combination with the peculiarities of karstic coastal aquifers constitute a huge worldwide problem, which is particularly relevant for coastal aquifers of the Mediterranean basin. This paper offers a review of scientific activities realized to pursue the optimal utilization of Apulian coastal groundwater....

تحلیل فضایی مخاطرات طبیعی ناشی از برداشت بی‌رویه آب زیرزمینی در آبخوان ساحلی ارومیه

Coastal aquifers comparing noncoastal aquifers, are faced to natural hazards more rapidly due to incorrect managements (Bear et al. 1999). Aquifer’s vulnerability to various pollutants or intrusion of saline water to coastal aquifers have been studied by several researchers so far (Chachadi et al., 2002 Cardona et al., 2004). Overlay models are produced to overlay physical indicator maps ...

The State of the French Mediterranean Coastal Aquifers

ABSTRACT The French Mediterranean coastal aquifers are essentially alluvial, deep sedimentary and karst. Whereas the alluvial aquifers are particularly sensitive to salt-water intru sion, contamination of the deep aquifers is generally due to vertical hydraulic connec tion with the shallow aquifers. As for the karst systems, which are quite well developed f rom Languedoc-Roussillon to Provence-...

MODSharp: Regional-scale numerical model for quantifying groundwater flux and contaminant discharge into the coastal zone

In this paper the development of a quasi-three-dimensional numerical model that can be used for quantifying groundwater inputs and associated contaminant discharged from coastal aquifers into the coastal zone at a regional scale is presented. The present model is called MODSharp. In order to handle problems at a regional scale, the sharp interface approach which is used for conceptualising seaw...
